The Ministry of Education has directed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to phase out the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) by August 30, 2025.
This directive was delivered by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, during the inauguration of the newly constituted Governing Board of the NTC on Tuesday, July 15.
According to the Minister, the decision aligns with a broader set of reforms aimed at modernising teacher assessment in Ghana.
The new framework will shift focus from standardised testing to a more holistic evaluation that prioritises academic preparation and hands-on practical fieldwork.
“This move signals a shift from simply testing what teachers know, to assessing how they apply their knowledge in real classroom settings,” the Minister stated.
He also announced that candidates who have previously failed the GTLE will be given one final opportunity to re-sit the exams before the phase-out is completed.
“The last of the Teacher Licensure Exams must be concluded not later than August 30. If there is a final opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not go beyond August 30,” he added.
The reform is expected to reshape Ghana’s teacher qualification system and enhance the quality of education delivery nationwide.
